The Eagles’ catchy fight song has been around since 1960. The song is simple, direct, and captures the spirit of most Eagles fans.
Unfortunately, the City of Brotherly love has also developed quite a reputation of being less than welcoming to the opposing team. At last weekend’s NFC championship game in Philly, fans of the Minnesota Vikings were actually warned ahead of time of the type of greeting they might receive from some of the Philly fanatics.
Vikings quarterback, Case Keenum, said that his family needed protection from the “welcoming” that they received from some Philadelphia Eagles fans at the game last Sunday.
Philadelphia sports fans proudly wear the badge of being some of the roughest on opponents and their fans. Who can forget when Eagles fans loudly booed and threw snowballs at Santa Claus back in 1968!
Or, how about the time when Eagles fans booed Dallas Cowboy wide receiver, Michael Irvin, after he was injured on a pass from Troy Aikman back in 1999? Irvin was a well-established hot dog in his days, so the dislike for #88 was rather strong around the league at the time. But, Eagles fans took their hatred to another level on that day.
Despite the misdeeds of some Philly fans, this Eagles team has earned its chance to take on the defending champs, the New England Patriots, in the Super Bowl in two weeks. The irony is that the host city for this year’s game is none other than Minneapolis.
In anticipation of the onslaught of thousands of Philadelphia Eagles fans, Vikings’ faithful in the host city may have a few pranks up their sleeves as payback for the “brotherly love” they received in Philly last weekend. If you’re an Eagles fan, you might want to think twice before taking that Uber trip to the stadium in Minneapolis for the big game.
With so many championships recently, the New England Patriots have likely become used to being considered the villain in recent Super Bowl games. But this year, Tom Brady and company will have the backing of the majority of local fans in Minnesota.
So, congratulations to the Eagles on going to the Super Bowl! But, as the moviedom’s Terminator once said, “Payback is hell”, and the Minnesota Vikings fans won’t soon forget how they were treated last weekend in Philadelphia.
