Beginning this Saturday and into early January, the college football season ends with an expanded set of bowl games. Teams which finished 6-6 or better this season were eligible for one of dozens of bowl games.
Did you know that 17 of this year’s college football bowl games are owned and operated by ESPN? Though that sounds very benevolent of the good folks at ESPN, the network knows that one million or more adult men (usually woefully unprepared for Christmas season shopping) will be watching.
Those same viewers will be watching 75+ minutes of expensive advertisements during these football games in the coming weeks.
As long as ESPN’s own set of bowl games operate somewhat close to the break-even point, the worldwide leader in sports programming will emerge as the winner.
The newly-expanded 12-team College Football playoffs has added eight more games this season. A total of 11 “win-or-go home” games will be played in late December and during the traditional New Year’s Day bowl slate.
That is eight more games than last season’s two semifinals and title game.
As a service to my fantastic readers and podcast listeners at SwampSwamiSports.com, below is a list of every bowl game this holiday season along with my final ranking for each participant.
So, get your popcorn ready and keep some caffeinated beverages nearby if you plan to watch all or most of these upcoming bowl games!
