As the National Basketball Association plays their annual All Star game tonight in Los Angeles, it is time to do some mid-season evaluations.
On the court, the Houston Rockets are giving Golden State a run for the Western Division crown. In the East, the surprising Toronto Raptors have grabbed the lead at the halfway point away from the fading Boston Celtics and the feuding Cleveland Cavaliers. The thought of a possible Houston/Toronto NBA championship in June must be making ABC/ESPN/Disney very nervous right now.
At the midpoint of this NBA season, it’s also time to see who has even noticed this year’s new sponsorship logos on the uniforms of many NBA teams. In an effort to allow teams to raise even more money to recoup paying for players and team expenses, the NBA has begun allowing teams to sell sponsorship logos on the team uniforms.
For example, the Boston Celtics (see above) are sporting a nifty General Electric logo on their jersey. GE and the C’s stated that the team will benefit from General Electric’s “best in class technology and analytics platforms.” Methinks that REALLY means, “We could really care less, but thanks for all that extra money, GE!”
Other NBA franchises have begun their season sporting new logos, too. The Minnesota Timberwolves are now brought to you by Fitbit. The Toronto Raptors are sponsored by Sun Life. When thinking about Toronto, the idea of anything connected to the “Sun” just doesn’t cross my mind, though.
We need to help some NBA teams get more appropriate logos befitting of both the team and their respective cities! Here are a few suggested ideas:
Miami Heat – currently sponsored by “Ultimate Software”??? Let’s change it to the Miami Heat – brought to you by Tabasco Sauce!
Milwaukee Bucks – now sponsored by Harley Davidson. How about the Milwaukee Bucks – sponsored by Ace Cash Express?
Denver Nuggets – are currently advertising for Western Union. No more! The Denver Nuggets of McDonald’s is much better for business!
Sacramento Kings – now backed by Blue Diamond Almonds? Meh. It’s time to unveil the improved uniforms of the Sacramento “Burger” Kings!
And, finally, the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently sponsored by Akron’s own Goodyear. Not bad. But based on the constant whining and drama on this team, it’s time to roll out the Cavaliers of Cleveland – brought to you by Pampers and TMZ!
